Projects

In this section you will discover some of the projects in which we are currently working or which we have already finished in Azizakpe.

Finished projects and Achievements

Health Insurance Cards

We got it! The 103 kids from Azizakpe School have now their Health Insurance Cards! With them they will be medically attended around the country. However, this card does not include blood analyticals and long term hospitalizations.

SolAR panels

Around the year 2011, the Spanish government along with Elecnor executed a project in the island. It was meant to bring power to the school and some of the most important locations in the island by placing some solar panels. After finishing the installation, no more manteinance was done from Elecnor and therefore it deteriorated quickly.

In 2016, Akoma hired a group of students belonging to Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) to inspect and restore the installation. Thanks to this, now the school has three fully working installations which provide 12 V for light bulbs and 220V to power electronic devices.

LOCAl network for ada east distric hospital

Not only in Azizakpe, Akoma is also present in other areas of Ada. In 2018, a group of students from Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in collaboration with Akoma developed an installation to be able to computerise the patient information system in Ada East district hospital, which before was manually done by paper folders.

This is was achieved through the installation of a local network. With routers and signal extenders all laptops and desktop computers in the hospital were connected to a server that stores the data of the patients.
We intend that once the patient information is recorded via the software at the records department it can be shared with the other departments to ensure efficient healthcare.

Drinking water for everyone

Unfortunately, there is no reliable access to drinking water on the island of Azizakpe. That is especially a problem when it comes to the school as the students need water to be able to concentrate. So in 2017, we decided to improve the situation by building a reliable water catching system. Together with two German volunteers, we connected some tubes and a water storage tank so the rainwater can be catched and be used for the students to drink.

Ongoing Projects

A boat for azizakpe

To visit the doctor, to go to the market or for fishing, Azizakpe inhabitants need a boat to communicate with the mainland.

That is why in summer 2017, we started building a boat for Azizakpe with the help of our unflagging volunteers and the cooperation of Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). We also managed to purchase an engine for the boat and put fiber on the outside to prevent water from entering the boat. In addition, the school children and our volunteers used colour and their handprints to make the boat look pretty. Unfortunately, there is a small leaking at one point that we have to fix now before we can put the boat on the water and hand it over to the community.

Summer School

As every year, Akoma opens the school in summer. This is important not only because educational issues, but also because the school provides access to drinkable water and to electricity. Furthermore, Akoma pays a daily meal for the kids that attend the summer school, ensuring a correct nourishment. This is done through the Teaming initiative.

Volunteers are the heart of the summer school. Thanks to them, the summer school can orginize activities intending to give the children meaningful opportunities to develop their creativities and boost their academic levels. If you are keen to volunteer during next summer to make Summer School possible contact us. We will be pleased to welcome you in our team.

After school programme

Since 2018, our long-term-volunteers organize an After School Programme for the children of Azizapke. Three times the week, the children come back to school in the afternoon. The programme offers a mix of learning and playing. We always engage them to some classroom activities to improve their intellectual knowledge before going out to play some fun games with them.

Teacher Support programme

As the Primary School of Azizapke has always had a lack of teachers and struggled to put someone on charge of Kindergarten 1&2, we decided to support the school with an extra person.

Since 2015, our organization provides someone who takes care of the youngest children in school.

In December 2019, we initiated our plastic project together with Christiane, our short-term-volunteer, and our two long-term-volunteers Kirsten and Greta from Germany. For two weeks, we used the After School Programme to work with the children from Class 4, 5 and 6 on the different topics concerning plastic, for example microplastics and organic/ inorganic waste. At the end, they presented their new knowledge to their parents in church to ensure that the whole community knows about the bad effects of plastic in the environment. Our next goal is to organize some bins and cleaning materials as well as to establish a regular cleaning system together with the children from the After School Programme.

#saveazizapke

There is a pressing need to save our island from the rising sea levels. Some trees and family homes have been lost already. Thus we seek people or entities with technical know-how, engineering or water sciences background.
